about

I'm going to give a little context to this track and tell you abouit my working process...

So I'm working on a video about Miles Davis Electric Era and my 'thing' is composing a soundtrack that's inspired by the subject matter. I use the time I spend making the soundtracks meditating upon what the artists were doing on a structural level. The reading that i do at the time gives me context too. During this time I'm usually writing or have written the first draft of what I'm going to be saying.

When I've got the soundtrack pretty much to my satisfaction I go back to writing, I try and make sure that the rhythm of the words fits with the music and that all the points are generally covered (I'm not trained in any of this, or music for that matter so have kind of had to decide upon my own working progress as a one person band).

Once I'm happy with the script I try and record the whole thing as one take (I use a laptop as a teleprompter).

But that's all for the videos like that which will soon be on this channel about Miles Davis' electric era.

Now it's time to talk about the music. I don't think I've ever programmed more drums and percussion than with this track. Add to that that there are three layers of electric piano, acoustic and electric bass, two guitars. I tried to build up polyrhythms with the percussion. There's Tabla, cuica, congas keeping the four four and all kinds of 7/8 and 12/8 patterns layered over there.

Wah is prominent (I found the only way to get near a convincing Miles Davis horn sound was to use was and long sustained notes). I tried to get the sound of the sound of a complete band by using one common reverb.

The title 'Amma' is the name of the god of the Dogon People who now live I think in Mali but orignate from the Lower Nile regio. If you don't know about their culture then trust me it's a treat to learn about they say they had contact with aliens and I'm inclined to believe them. they understand Cell Division, blood circulation, a lot more.

Yah, that's enough of my yakking, lets Jazz Funk Fusion Rock
